Our attention is drawn to the indiscriminate littering and dumping of solid waste in some parts of Monrovia and its environs, despite the numerous educational programs on sanitation and the need for residents of the city and its environs to keep their environment clean.
We observe that some people drop waste from moving vehicles, while others dump waste right into drains, which are meant to carry waste water. The act of dumping solid waste into drains, we further observe, is particularly prevalent in central Monrovia and its immediate environs such as Vai Town etc.
The relevant government agencies, specifically the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), had expressed grave concern over this uncalled-for act, which authorities say, contributes greatly to the untidy nature of some parts of Monrovia. As a result of this unwarranted act, it is often common during the rainy season to find drains chocked to the brim with solid waste materials, mainly plastics bags and feces.
The disgusting odor from these drains is huge, not to talk about providing a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which cause malaria and other water borne diseases. In consideration of the danger littering and dumping of solid waste in the streets and drains pose to our environment, we urge all those who are involved in this needless habit to stop.
We further urge the doers to stop this unwarranted act because it is doing more harm to our country than good. We all need to buttress the government’s efforts in keeping our city and environment clean. We must do everything to help keep our city and environment clean. Let us stop the littering and dumping of solid waste in the streets and drains for good of our beloved country.
