Liberia Airport Authority Begins Rehabilitation of RIA

The General Manager of the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has begun the rehabilitation of the Roberts International Airport (RIA). In a chat with this paper on Monday, January 28, 2013, Mr. Julius Dennis, said rehabilitation of the runway at the RIA has been the immediate goal to be achieved by the LAA management.

According to Mr. Dennis, the urgent repair works on the RIA runway will take up to six-eight weeks. He disclosed that the management is currently in the planning stage for further repair and rehabilitation works on the RIA runway. He further disclosed that this will be an ongoing process until the entire runway is done with.

“Our immediate goal is to do some immediate rehabilitation on the RIA runway. We have earmarked on other rehabilitation works,” said the general manager of the LAA.  Speaking further, the LAA general manager said the LAA in collaboration with the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority (LCAA) has also begun the marking of the runway.

He said the marking of the runway is part of the many activities aimed at improving safety standard at the airport. At the same time, Mr. Dennis announced the arrival of some navigation equipment of the LAA. The equipment, he said, were donated to the LAA by the United State Agency for International Development (USAID).

He said the donation of the equipment is in fulfillment of a long time commitment by USAID some years back. Mr. Dennis described the arrival of the new navigation equipment as a great relief to the LAA, saying most of the old equipment were already dilapidated. “The new equipment will be very helpful to us because some of the old ones are damaged beyond the state of repair,” Mr. Dennis added.
