Ellen Fires Back at Lawmaker

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, through presidential spokesperson Jerolinmek Matthew Piah,  has harshly responded to Maryland County Representative Dr. Bhoufal Chambers, for criticizing former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Presidential spokesman Piah stated Thursday, 22 November 2012 that some of Rep. Chambers’ comments are unfortunate and marred with serious contradictions.

Recently, Rep. Chambers criticized former British Prime Minister Blaire  over what the lawmaker termed the former British Premier’s insincere grading of the performance of the Government of Liberia (GoL). It can be recalled that former British Prime Minister Blaire during his recent visit to Liberia  commended President Johnson-Sirleaf and her government for the progress being made on the delivery of the government’s agenda, especially in areas such as roads, power and ports.

However, Rep. Chambers challenged the former British Prime Minister for not highlighting issues of nepotism and corruption plaguing the governance process of Liberia, adding that he [Blaire] may have taken kickback to heap praises on the Johnson-Sirleaf led administration.
But presidential spokesman Piah averred that: “I do not understand the outrage that is coming from Representative Chambers on Mr. Blair’s comment,” adding that: “I think Honorable Chambers needs serious political realignment.”

President Johnson-Sirleaf’s spokesman accentuated that the Maryland County lawmaker has allowed himself to be overtaken by emotion, and he’s being so sentimental. He cautioned that the soonest Rep. Chambers recognizes his obligation as a national leader and begins to conduct himself in acceptable manners in the interest of Liberia and Liberians; the better it would be for the lawmaker.

He added that for Rep. Chambers to have suggested that the former British premier took kickback was unthinkable, stating that: “my question to him is from whom?” The presidential spokesman indicated that if the Maryland lawmaker is insinuating in any way that “there were kickbacks from the President, then I think it’s sad for him and he must take some period to reflect on the direction he’s taking, and begin to conduct himself appropriately”.
