The Government of Liberia (GOL) has officially launched its “Open Budget Initiative” in an effort to ensure accountability and transparency in the public sector. The initiative was officially launched Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at the premises of the Ministry of Finance in Monrovia.

The launch of the “Open Budget Initiative” was also displayed by Finance Minister Amara Konneh on an electronic billboard worth thousands of United States Dollars and witnessed by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, U.S. Ambassador Madam Deborah Malac, government officials, and people from the business community  amongst others.

Speaking during the ceremony, Finance Minister Amara Konneh said the initiative is intended to step up government’s efforts towards accountability and transparency. Minister Konneh said the exercise would also help to ensure that Liberians have trust and confidence in government.

He said citizens must be aware of the manner and form in which money is expended by government.
The government Ministry boss pointed out that the “Open Budget Initiative” would enable citizens and tax payers know and understand the expenditure of their money.

According to him, the initiative would explain policies and strategies as it relates to the implementation of the budget.
Min. Konneh stated that “government is providing public access to citizens to increase transparency and accountability.” He pointed out that the issue of transparency remains key towards good governance and corruption, and as such, the Liberian government would continue to strive in this direction.

Minister Konneh stressed the need for public funds to be used for the intended purpose. He vowed to work in line with the President’s development agenda. He then lauded international partners and tax payers for their numerous contributions to the growth and development of Liberia’s economy.
