Preparations are said to be underway for the official launch of the Gbarnga Regional Justice and Security Hub in Bong County. According to a Justice Ministry press release, the Government of Liberia with UNDP and the Peace building Fund Support has adopted a catalytic initiative to enhance access to justice and community security at the regional and county levels, with the development of five regional justice and security hubs across the Country.
The Gbarnga Regional Justice and Security Hub, which is expected to be officially launched on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 in Bong County, will provide a decentralized and a holistic approach to justice and security service delivery and a means by which national agencies can provide effective justice and security in preparation for UNMIL’s transition.
President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is expected to officially launch the Hub along with an array of senior government officials including the Chief Justice, Ministers of Finance, Justice, and Internal Affairs. A high power delegation from the United Nations led by the Special Representative of the Secretary General and the Peace building Commission Chair will attend the program which will be held at the Gbarnga Regional Hub located on the Gbarnga-Lofa highway.
The holistic approach to the Hubs has envisioned a balanced strengthening of the justice and security institutions, law enforcement, the courts, state prosecution and defense, and corrections both in terms of capacity and infrastructure; the enhancement of linkages between the institutions; and the development of relationships between the institutions and the communities they serve. Each of these aspects is seen as a complementary component of the HUBS.
Meanwhile, the first contingent of forty-five (45) Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization (BIN) officers has been deployed at the Gbarnga Regional Hub in Bong County.
Already officers of the Liberia National Police, the Police Support Unit (PSU), officers Bureau of Correction and Rehabilitations, Probation officers and the Sexual Gender Based Crime Unit were been deployed at the Regional Hub before the 2011 general and presidential elections giving support to other officers in the region of Lofa, Nimba and Bong Counties to calms down crimes and giving regular patrol to all borders entry points in the region.
