The Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) has alarmed over a “criminal” abortion that led to the death of a lady identified as Josephine Memakeh in Monrovia. According to a statement issued in Monrovia recently, the LMDC said it had received an official complaint from the family of the deceased concerning the “criminal” abortion.
The statement pointed out that the “abortion” was carried out at a local hospital in Doe Community on the Bushrod Island, outside Monrovia. The LMDC said the family of the victim asserted in their complaint that the deceased was convinced by her boyfriend to abort the pregnancy.
The statement issued under the signature of the Acting Registrar General of the LMDC, Mr. Moses Pewu, quoted doctors at the St. Joseph Catholic Hospital as saying that the victim’s abdominal wall was totally damaged due to severe infections. The statement further quoted the doctors as disclosing that the late Josephine carried out the abortion a week before she was admitted at the Catholic hospital.
Meanwhile, the LMDC said it has launched an investigation into the matter along with the National Security Agency (NSA) which led to the arrest of a prime suspect believed to be a Ghanaian. But unfortunately, the LMDC said it was informed by the NSA on the day of the appearance of the suspect before it that he has escaped from jail. The LMDC added that it has contacted the NSA to give account on the whereabouts of the suspect only identified as Moses Armah.
Meanwhile, the LMDC has disclosed that it has launched a major campaign against the illegal act. The LMDC urged the public to report cases of any abortion or medical malpractice in their various communities or workplaces.
