Affected Community, Sime Darby, Restore Cordial Working Relationship

A group under the banner of Sime Darby Affected Community through its Chairman has said cordial working relationship between them (affected community) and the Management of Sime Darby (SD) Plantation Liberia Incorporated in Grand Cape Mount County has been restored.
The Sime Darbey Affected Community had protested the manner and form the company was proceeding with its operations in their communities and villages at their detriment (without any benefit for them).

SD Plantation Liberia Incorporated is a branch of Sime Darby, an international oil palm company based in Malaysia. The company signed a 63-year concession agreement with the Liberian government in 2009 to develop 220,000 hectares into oil palm and rubber plantations. The concession area is spread out in Grand Cape Mount, Bomi and Gbarpolu Counties.

Under the concession agreement, Sime Darby Plantation (Liberia) Inc. will work with smallholders to develop an additional 44,000 hectares under an Out growers' Scheme.  This scheme is designed to assist smallholders and local communities, a programme that is similar to Malaysia's extremely successful Felda programme.

In a statement,   Mr. Foboi said the cordial working relationship was restored after the company agreed to work in line with them (Sime Darby Affected Community) to get their just compensation. Among other things, he added that the citizens of Grand Cape Mount County in the SD operational areas are supportive of the good work of the company, and as such, there is no need for any more ‘hauling and pulling.’
