How Montserrado Failed to Repeat History on Sunday

Montserrado County on Sunday, January 27, 2013 failed to repeat history as they went down to Grand Cape Mount County in the grand final of the 2013 National County Sports Meet (NCSM). Montserrado County, which  defeated Grand Cape Mount County 2-0 in the opening day of their Group-I fixture,  were beaten 3-1 on post match penalty at the Samuel Kanyan Doe (SKD) Sports Complex in Paynesville, outside Monrovia.

The penalty shootouts were determined following 120 minutes of soccer action which ended 1-1. The defeat is the second of its kind suffered by Montserrado County to Grand Cape Mount in the grand final of the County Meet within 40 years. The first was in the grand final of the tournament in 1969 when the Monrovia boys went down to the Cape Mountainians 1-0.

Montserrado started the game with much ball possession, and came close to registering the first goal of the match in the 12th minute, but striker Darlington Hill shot went just few inches off target. Montserrado County continued the pressure and finally got paid in the 27th minute of the encounter through Daniel Pongay.

But Grand Cape Mount did not lose hope as they kept on pressing to come on level term. The Cape Mountainians later broke through a minute to half time. The two teams came back strongly into the second looking for the much needed goal but none of them could break the deadlock,.

The match was settled down for an extra 30 minutes which eventually resulted into the spot kicks, which the Cape Mountainians won following poor performance by Montserrado County.
